RACE FOR THE PROFESSION This
year, DEASC will sponsor a series of informal conversations with faculty
about race and the profession of English. The titled of this series plays on the word Òrace.Ó On the one hand, these conversations
are meant to equip us better as we race to the endpoints of our graduate
careers. In this way, they are
meant to build mentoring relationships with faculty and with other graduate students. On the other, we see these
conversations as supplementing the critical literature on the profession,
which so often omits direct reference to race. We hope to pursue conversations about (among other things)
the way in which race inflects pedagogy, the various administrative and
committee demands that are made on students and faculty of color, the
opportunities and management of more individualized mentoring relationships
with undergraduates, and strategies to productively intervene in the discourse
of the profession and the university when we are (and when we are not) called
upon to Òrepresent.Ó LATINO
